How to make your sign stand out
Your signage is an important part of your marketing plan and you want it to perform to the best of its ability. Creating signage that stands out from the crowd will help to attract more customers to your business and strengthen your brand identity. The question then becomes, how do you make signs that are different from the competition?
Our experts at VitalSigns, a signage design company, have a few tips that can help.
1. Think outside the box
Everyone has a sign that is square or rectangular, so what happens if you made a differently shaped sign? It would stand out! You can go with another shape like a circle or diamond, or go even bigger by asking a signage design company to create a sign in the shape of your logo! While the shape of your sign may seem like a small detail, it’s a sure fire way to get noticed!
2. Utilize contrast
To make sure your messaging is clear and your sign stands out, you should make sure that you are utilizing contrast in the best way possible. That means picking a font color and a background color that are going to play off of each other and not make your sign hard to read. This is why a lot of signs are made with black and white, because they are in contrast with one another! However, if you want your sign to stand out, you will want to pick a more unique color pair.
3. Increase negative space
Negative space, or what is sometimes called white space, is space on the sign that is not taken up by a word or a graphic. When a sign looks too full or chaotic, many consumers don’t bother trying to read what it says. Ideally, 30-40 percent of a sign's surface should consist of white space.
4. Include a graphic
Try to not just make a sign that has words, consider adding a graphic as well. Graphics are a great way to catch a customer's attention while simultaneously adding a little flair to your sign. You don’t have to go too crazy, but including your logo or a simple graphic can make your sign stand out.
5. Avoid symmetry
While symmetry is most pleasing to a customer's eyes, it is also something they are used to. If you are looking for a technique that will draw their attention then ask a signage design company if they can make something that is asymmetrical. This can be done by writing words in a criss-cross pattern or out of alignment or the shape of the sign have imperfect angles. Of course, readability should always be your number one priority for your sign, but see what crazy designs you can get away with and your sign still makes sense. It will pay off in the long run!
